The U.S. Government's Secret Recovery of a Sunken Soviet Submarine with Three Nuclear Missiles

In 1974, the U.S. Government, specifically the CIA under then CIA Director Richard Helms, recovered from the Pacific Ocean floor portions of a sunken Soviet submarine.

The submarine, named K-129, carried three nuclear-armed ballistic missiles, each with a one-megaton nuclear warhead.

The exact contents recovered are unknown, but the recovery ship, the Glomar Explorer, did haul contents to Hawaii.
